On My Radar: Loving Naturals Sunscreen

I first learned of Loving Naturals last year when I was actively researching a safer sunscreen on the Environment Working Group’s Skin Deep database and saw that they were given Low Hazard scores. Their sunscreen has non-nano zinc oxide and provides broad range UVA & UVB protection. It’s a physical sunscreen that forms a protective layer on the skin to scatter and reflect light rather than absorb into the skin. The ingredients are: Non-nano size Zinc Oxide – 24.7%, Purified Water, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Aloe Vera Gel, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides (from Coconut Oil), Organic Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Hemp Seed Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol derived from Organic Coconut Oil without the use of chemicals, Non-GMO & Organic Corn Starch, Stearic Acid from Palm Oil, Organic Raw Sugar, Sea Salt, Wild Harvested Aspen Bark Extract.

They’ve recently released an updated sunscreen that I can’t wait to buy when I have a bit more wiggle room for new product purchases. This new Clear Face SPF 30 Sunscreen ($21.99, 4.3 oz) offers the same safety ratings as their original formula but with “improved consistency and feel.” The problem I’ve had with some of the safer sunscreens is that while they do the job of providing much better sun protection at much lower chemical exposure, it also makes you look like Casper the Friendly Ghost. I understand there is a trade off, but it can be a deterrent for people who want to wear a daily sunscreen, especially to work or  indoor events without feeling awkward and uncomfortable. We all want to feel confident, right? I’m hoping this new version comes without that ghostly effect. Loving Naturals also sells hand and body lotions formulated with 100% natural and organic ingredients. Their unscented hemp lotion, ideal for those with sensitive skin, is also on my wish list.

The cost is pricey for some people, especially with the six month shelf life, but they are offering quality ingredients and they’re still not as pricey as some brands that are in the $30 to $40 range. I do wish though that everything – safer cosmetics/food/households goods – were more affordable and accessible for everyone.

Loving Naturals was created by a wife and husband team who wanted to provide families with products free from dangerous chemicals and preservatives. They often bought products they thought were safe only to find out later they contained harmful ingredients. This prompted them to start their own company out of the desire to use the most safe and natural products on their children and provide consumers with a product they could trust. They research and disclose every ingredient, and use the most natural or organic ingredients available.
