Peony: A Symbol of Happy Marriage & Prosperity

Peonies are wonderful for weddings not just for their obvious beauty, with its fluttering petals, but they symbolize happy marriage, prosperity, and good fortune, particularly in many Asian cultures (which could explain why the peony has been a frequent motif since ancient times in Chinese paintings and Japanese tattoos). In the Western culture, the peony is used to celebrate the 12th wedding anniversary.

I took these photos at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in May 2009.
